Laupahoehoe Service Project - Laupahoehoe Train Museum
Each April in partnership with the County of Hawaii Parks and Recreation, the entire Laupahoehoe High and Elementary School and community get together. This event is to honor the memory of the tsunami with a memorial service to those who lost their lives and to do community service to beautify Laupahoehoe Point.
Students work side by side with senior citizens to plant trees, construct picnic benches, paint buildings and trash barrels and in general spruce up the park. Each year additions to the park are made as a gift to the community; a regulation size sand volleyball court and horseshoe pits were installed, a history kiosk built to share the history of the Point.
Each years service project also have “talk story’ sessions where students listen as their kupuna(elders) talk story and share their historic memories; remembering their towns along the coast, plantation life, the tsunami all the events of days gone by.
